THEOLOGY AND

THEOLOGY AND RELIGION.

"And Jesus answered him, - The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord; and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength. And the second is like, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these."- Mark xii. 29-31.

In this answer of Jesus, no mind capable of reflection fails to recognize the profoundest wisdom. And in no respect, I believe, will deeper wisdom be discovered in it, than in the combination which it exhibits of Theology and Religion, and in the rank which he assigns to each in the enumeration. You will observe that he puts theology first and religion in the second place, doctrine before duty, theory before practice, motive before action, premise before inference, right believing as a necessary prerequisite to right acting, knowledge as the foundation and duty built upon it, truth as the root and goodness growing out of it with corresponding strength and luxuriance. I intend in this discourse to give some illustrations of the wisdom of this arrangement.
