And it appearing that no one person had received a majority of the total vote cast in the foregoing ballot, the Speaker of the House of Representatives announced that no choice had been made by the joint assembly on the seventy-third ballot for United States Senator.

Pending further proceedings,

At 1:40 o'clock P. M., Representative McKitrick moved that the joint assembly do now adjourn until 12 o'clock, meridian, to-morrow.

And the yeas and nays being demanded, the motion was carried by the following vote: Yeas 103, nays 101.

On motion of Mr. Secrest, was referred to the Committee on State Charitable Institutions.

INTRODUCTION OF BILLS.

Mr. Knopf introduced a bill, Senate Bill No. 141, for "An act to amend section 59 of an act entitled 'An act to amend sections 59 and 60 of an act entitled 'An act to revise the law in relation to counties,' approved March 31, 1874, as amended by the act of May 20, 1879,' and to amend said act by adding a section in relation thereto to be known as section 59%, approved June 10, 1887.”

On motion of Mr. Knopf, the rules were suspended, and the bill was read at large a first time, and,

On motion of Mr. Knopf, was referred to the Committee on Judicial Department and Apportionment.

Mr. President: I am directed to inform the Senate that the Speaker of the House of Representatives has appointed as members of the joint committee to investigate the Chicago Live Stock Exchange, under a joint resolution, heretofore adopted, the following members of the House: Hunter of Knox, Hamilton, Cockrell.

READING SENATE BILLS A SECOND TIME.

Senate Bill No. 94, for "An act to amend sections one, two, three, four, six and eight of an act entitled 'An act to revise the law in relation to the rate of interest, and to repeal certain acts therein named,' approved May 24, 1879, in force July 1, 1879,"

Having been printed, was taken up and read at large a second time,

And the question being, "Shall the bill be ordered to a third reading?"

Mr. Anderson offered the following amendments, viz.:

Amend as follows:

1. By substituting for the words "continue to be five (5),” in line two (2) of section one (1) the word "six (6)."

2. By substituting "six (6)" for "fiye (5)," in line one (1) of section two (2), and in line two (2) of section three (3).

3. By substituting "six (6)" for "seven (7)" in line two (2) of section four (4), in line two of section six (6), and in lines nine (9) and eleven (11), section 8 of printed bill.

The question being, "Shall the foregoing amendments be adopted?"

Mr. O'Conor moved to lay the foregoing amendments on the table,

Which motion prevailed.

Mr. Higbee offered the following amendment to the bill, which were adopted, viz.:

Amend by striking out the words "continue to," in the second line of section one of the printed bill.

Mr. Sheets offered the following amendment, which was lost, viz.:

Amend sections four (4), six (6) and eight (8) by striking out the word "seven" wherever it occurs in said sections, and insert in lieu thereof the word "six."

The question being, "Shall the foregoing bill as amended be engrossed and printed for a third reading?" it was decided in the affirmative.

CONSIDERATION OF RESOLUTIONS.

The following preamble and joint resolution, introduced yesterday by Mr. MacMillan, was taken up for consideration, and, On the motion of Mr. MacMillan, was referred to the Committee on World's Columbian Exposition, viz.:

WHEREAS, The World's Columbian Commission has requested the enactment of such legislation as will secure a proper exhibition of the resources.
