Speaker-Rt. Hon. W. C. Gully [Carlisle] Adjournment of the House from Friday to Monday, Motion for.
Closure, Question of, could not be dis- cussed, Dec. 5, 140.
Range of Debate on this Motion for Adjournment was restricted-It was not in order to re-discuss matters which had been debated and decided--Attention had been called to "new" and "urgent" matters and the debate must now be restricted to those matters, Dec. 5, 140.
Right to urge Urgent Questions. It was not like a Motion for Ad- journment Easter or Whitsuntide or any unusual Period, it was quite an ordi- nary proceeding, and the Speaker was not aware of any Rule, and was under the im- pression that it was an obso lete practice-He was very to interpose where any doubt could exist with regard to any opportu. nity of debate which might belong to the House, and therefore he would call on the Hon Member, Dec. 5, 131, 132.
Since 1856 there had been no Question of any debate on this Motion-In 1861 a Stand- ing Order was made dealing with the Adjournment from Friday to Monday, and there was no record of a Motion like that suggested — The practice of raising irrelevant discussion upon this Motion was obsolete and would inter- fere with other Business, Dec. 12, 1031.
