2. Bath fut du xiie siècle à la Réforme le siège d'un évèché, qui fut alors transféré, ou plutôt ramené, à Wells, où il se trouvait avant la conquète nor mande. L'évèque était abbé du monastère de Bath. Le diocèse est encore aujourd'hui dénommé diocèse de Bath et Wells.
