Excerpt from Nature Pictures by American Poets

The editor's aim in this compilation has been to select, from the works of representative American poets, certain pictures of nature, either vignettes of specific objects or broad landscape effects.

There has been a hope that the book might aid in nature study and might foster aesthetic observation and culture. The selections are all taken from authors of high literary rank, with the desire to promote among the younger students a further acquaintance with con temporaneous poets, and, at the same time, to recall familiarly certain classic American poems of description and narration.

Doubtless the selections disclose sins of commission and of omission. The editor deeply regrets the ah sence of poems by Sidney Lanier, since satisfactory arrangements could not be made with his publishers. In the introduction, however, tribute has been paid to the poet's sensitive and melodious nature pictures.
