BACTERIOLOGICAL TECHNIQUE.-A Laboratory Guide for the Medical, Dental and Technical Student. By J. W. H. Eyre, M. D., F. R. S., Edin., Bacteriologist to Guy's Hospital, and Lecturer on Bacteriology at the Medical and Dental Schools, etc. Octavo of 375 pages, with 170 illustrations. Philadelphia and London: W. B. Saunders & Co., 1902. Cloth, $2.50 net.

The title of this volume is a true index of its character, and in it the details of technique are given with a systematic fullness and clearness surpassed by no other work. It is therefore essentially a laboratory guide-one which will not be found wanting when resorted to for directions in making any bacteriologic analysis. The text covers the needs of technical students generally in medicine, dentistry, brewing, dairying or agriculture. The excellent terminology of Chester has been adopted throughout. The printed text is amply supplemented with original and accurate illustrations.

THE AMERICAN TEXT-BOOK OF OBSTETRICS.-In two volumes.

Edited by Richard C. Norris, M. D.; Art Editor, Robert L. Dickinson, M. D. Second Edition, Thoroughly Revised and Enlarged. Two handsome imperial octavo volumes of about 600 pages each; nearly 600 text-illustrations, and 49 colored and half-tone plates. Per volume: Cloth, $3.50 net; sheep, or half morocco, $4.00 net.

For the convenience of prospective purchasers, the new edition of this great work is now presented in two volumes. The results of related recent bacteriologic and chemicobiologic researches, and the wide range of surgery in treating the complications of pregnancy, labor and the puerperium, are fully represented herein by a thorough revision, necessitating considerable additions and in some instances rewriting of chapters. The new departure of an art editor, in the person of Dr. Robert L. Dickinson, is justified by the exceptional artistic value of the plates and other figures, which are distributed in profusion throughout both volumes. The present contributors to the text-book include. James C. Cameron, Edward P. Davis, Robert L. Dickinson, Henry J. Garrigues, Barton Cooke Hirst, Charles Jewett, Howard A. Kelly, Richard C. Norris, Chauncey D. Palmer, George A. Piersol, Edward Reynolds, Henry Schwarz and J. Clarence Webster. It will be noted that nearly all of these names are those

of authors of popular works on gynecology and obstetrics. The first volume of this second edition is concerned with anatomy, physiology, pregnancy and labor. In the second volume are considered dystocia, the puerperium, the new-born infant and obstetric surgery.

GENITO-URINARY AND VENEREAL DISEASES-A MANUAL FOR STUDENTS AND PRACTITIONERS.-By Louis E. Schmidt, M. S., M. D., Associate Professor of Genito-Urinary Diseases, Chicago Policlinic. Series edited by V. C. Pedersen, A. M., M. D. 16-Mo; 249 pages. Illustrated with twenty-one engravings. Lea Brothers & Co., Philadelphia and New York.

This is the first volume of the Medical Epitome Series, a series of brief manuals intended to give the maximum amount of information for a minimum price. The forelying volume is quite up-to-date and comparatively full on all the later methods of di- · rect diagnosis. Treatment is considered in a direct and practical manner, and many approved formulas are furnished. The text is adapted for quizzing by a set of questions at the end of each chaper.

THE PUBLIC AND THE DOCTOR.-By a Regular Physician. Published by Dr. B. E. Hadra, Dallas, Texas.

The purpose of this booklet is to furnish the masses with better information on medical subjects in a general way that shall be antidotal to fads and quackery. The author presents the case of regular medicine in its true light and simply enough for the common mind. He puts business facts plainly, and teaches people how to treat their family doctor. The brochure is intended to be distributed to patients by their physicians, and in this way we believe it might do much good to all concerned.

MANUAL OF GYNECOLOGY.-By Henry T. Byford, M. D., Professor of Gnecology and Clinical Gynecology in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Chicago; Professor of Gynecology in the Post-Graduate Medical School of Chicago and in the Chicago Clinical School. Third Revised Edition. Containing three hundred and sixty-three illustrations, many of which are original. Price, $3.00 net. Philadelphia: P. Blakiston's Son & Co., 1012 Walnut street. 1902.

The present edition of this practical manual has been considerably enlarged and recast to conform with the progress of the times. The book contains all that is necessary for the busy practitioner who does not limit his practice to gynecology. The arrangement of the text, the marginal notes, the distinctive types and the explicit text are especially serviceable to students. Many of the illustrations are schematic and greatly simplify the technique of operations and the details of anatomic relations. The author is a prominent teacher and practical gynecologist, and this work of his is thoroughly reliable and conservative. LEA'S SERIES OF POCKET TEXT BOOKS. DISEASES OF THE SKIN. A Manual for Students and Practioners. By Joseph Grindon, Ph. B., M. D., Professor of Clinical Dermatology and Syphilis, Washington University; Dermatologist to the O'Fallon Dispensary, St. Louis Mullanphy Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital and the Missouri Baptist Sanitarium. Illustrated with thirty-nine engravings. Lea Brothers & Co., Philadelphia and New York.

This volume is one of the best of the series of "Pocket TextBooks," being clear, compact and to the point. The author has drawn freely upon modern sources of dermatologic literature, but there is plenty of originality in the text, and the author's remarke on treatment are especially strong and sensible. For a low-priced manual the book is weii illustrated. It is doubtful if there is any work on skin diseases better adapted to the needs and time limits of medical students.

A TREATISE ON MASSAGE.-Its History, Mode of Application and Effects, Indications and Contra-indications. By Douglas Graham, M. D., of Boston, Mass., member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of the American Medical Association, of the Massachusetts Medical Society, etc. Third edition, Revised, Enlarged and Illustrated. Octavo; 462 pages. Price, $4.00. Philadelphia and London. J. B. Lippincott Company. 1902.

This work has the great superiority over most others on the same subject in being written by a competent medical man, who understands the human body as well as the manipulations of manual therapeutics. The history of the science and art of massage, its rationale and application in the proper place and at the

proper time are gone into comprehensively and instructively. The author is a pleasing writer as well as a trained scientist. The interpolation of sixty-three photographic figures aids greatly in the easy understanding of technical directions. There are also a few portraits, including that of Dr. J. B. Zabludowski, now Professor of Massage at the University of Berlin.

PHYSICIAN'S POCKET ACCOUNT MANUAL.-By J. J. Taylor, M.

D. Published by the Medical Council, 4105 Walnut street,
Philadelphia, Pa.

This book, which we have already had the pleasure of reviewing, furnishes in a strictly legal and very convenient form ample space for the business records of a year's work, including suitable blank pages for obstetric, mortuary and vaccination notes and cash account. The book is 42x734 inches, and is enclosed in a tasteful leather case. The price of both is one dollar; of the book alone, forty cents. We are of the opinion that no physician who has once availed himself of the aid of this pocket volume will ever be without it again.

THE PHYSICIAN'S VISITING LIST FOR 1903.—(Lindsay and Blakiston's). Fifty-second year of its publication. Price, one dollar net. Philadelphia: P. Blakiston's Son & Co., 1012 Walnut street.

This compact little pocket volume continues to be a great favorite with physicians, because of its neatness, small size and adaptability to the actual needs of daily practice. The close flap cover is particularly desirable in a book of this kind.

THE MEDICAL NEWS VISITING LIST.-1903. Thirty patients per week. Philadelphia and New York. Lea Brothers

& Co.

In addition to the usual tabulated blanks, this visiting-list comprises considerable collateral information for quick reference on signs of dentition, finding the day of confinement, thermometric scales, weights and measures, examination of the urine, important incompatibles, artificial respiration, diagnosis of eruptive fevers, poisons and antidotes, doses, therapeutic reminders and ligation of arteries.

A HANDBOOK OF MATERIA MEDICA, PHARMACY AND THERAPEUTICS.-Including the Physiological Action of Drugs, the Special Therapeutics of Disease, Official and Practical Pharmacy and Minute Directions for Prescription Writing. Ninth Edition, Revised and Enlarged. Octavo; 951 pages. Price, $5.00 net. Philadelphia: P. Blakiston's Son & Co., 1012 Walnut street. 1902.

In the fourteen years of its career Potter's Materia Medica and Therapeutics has come to be as much a standard work as Gray's Anatomy. The author has a great faculty of putting practical things clearly and concisely and of condensing facts without distorting them. One may find in this book full information on the animal extracts and all other medicinal matters of timely interest. The alphabetic arrangement conduces to facility of reference. The sections on classification of medicines and other general topics are comprehensive and readily comprehended. The large part of the text on special theropeutics furnishes an instantaneous key to the practice of leading authorities in the treatment of medical diseases and symptoms.

THE PRACTICE of Surgery.—A Treatise on Surgery for the Use of Practitioners and Students. By Henry R. Wharton, M. D., Clinical Professor of Surgery, Woman's Medical College of Pennsylvania, Surgeon to the Presbyterian and the Children's Hospitals; and B. Farquhar Curtis, M. Octavo; 1241 pages. Profusely illustrated. Third Edition. Philadelphia and London. J. B. Lippincott Company. 1902. The popularity of this work, as shown by the publication of three editions within five years, depends not so much on its attractive typographic appearance and the nearly one thousand illustrations, as on the intrinsic merits and intensely practical nature of the text. It is essentially a work for general practition
