PREFACE.

The objects of this book are:

To describe in detail every part of the machinery of government of the State of Illinois, and of each political sub-division of the State.

To state briefly all the important duties of every public officer in the State of Illinois.

To outline the government of the United States.

It has been written with especial reference to the wants of teachers and students, and officers of school districts and townships.

It is believed that it will be welcomed by all who desire to be intelligent as to the government in which they are most directly interested, namely, that of their own state, county, township and school district.
