Excerpt from The Sympathy of Religions

If the reader of this book is not to be disap pointed but is to derive pleasure and profit from its pages, it is necessary that he should un derstand its unique purpose and not approach it expecting to find in it what the writer has not intended to present. There are books of reli gion and books about religion, and there are still greater books both of and about religion, writ ten by men who do not believe that to under stand feeling one must be devoid of it but who dare to philosophize with the whole man in the conviction that it is possible to live and at the same time to understand life. An introduction to religion, or a comparative study of some of the great historic religions, ought to be an inter pretation, an expression of the highest experi ences suffused with intelligence, of the religious life understood.
