The work which follows is an acceptance of the invitation to explore the Woodward thesis further, and to test its validity in the case of one specific Southern state. A final critical evaluation of it appears in the conclusion. The main body of the following study is also more generally a history of race relations in Virginia, 1870-1902. Thus, it is intended to be useful as more than just a selection of evidence relative to a particular thesis. -- Preface.
