The first chapter was published nearly in its present form in the New Englander, October 1871. The next four chapters appeared at various inter vals in the Bibliotheca Sacra; these have, however, been rewritten and enlarged to meet the demands of the present time. Chapter sixth is in the line of the author's original investigations, and will, with its illustrations, it is hoped, enlarge some what the boundary of human knowledge.
