Excerpt from Treatise on Arithmetic, Practical and Theoretical

The systems Of numeration used by the tribes Of South America are also generally constructed on the decimal radix, but they are frequently very limited in extent. They also form the names Of the higher classes Of units by such complex combinations, that the words expressing them appear almost impossible to be remem bered. There is, however, one instance in which, in an Original native South American language, viz. The ancient Peruvian, a decimal system of numeration exists, not less extensive than that of the Greeks and Romans, and one, indeed, which bears to ours a very curious analogy. There are distinct names for the second, third, and fourth orders of units.
