Excerpt from Goodrich's Fifth School Reader

The present volume contains lessons that are considered suitable for children who have made considerable progress in reading, but are not yet advanced to the highest classes. The lessons comprise a great variety of prose and verse, description, narrative, dialogue, sketches of natural history, and didactic essays enlivened by illustrations from his tory and biography.

It has been the aim of the author so to graduate the work that the pupil may continually proceed to lessons higher, in some respect, than those through which he has passed.
