Born January 21. 1824; Died May 10, 1863. Major-General Joseph E. Johnston, the hero of several wars and commander of the Confederate forces at the first battle of Bull Run. Born February 3, 1807; died March 21, 1891. Major-General John Bell Hood, who fought valorously at Gaines' Mill, Gettysburg, and on other battlefields. He succeeded Johnston, and was in turn succeeded by General Taylor. Born June 1, 1831; died August 30, 1879. Major-General Braxton Bragg distinguished himself at Buena Vista. After Shiloh, ern division. he succeeded Beauregard in command of the WestVictorious at Chickamauga, and fought Grant before Chattanooga. Born March 22, 1817; died September 27, 1876. Major-General James Longstreet, renowred as a hard fighter and a hero on many bloody battlefields. Held various offices in the customs service, and was appointed Minister to Turkey by Hayes.
